Horses are dynamic, powerful creatures, able to innately sense emotions and instinctively react to their environment. At TRAILS Carolina, equine therapy is a key component to the TRAILS way of working with adolescents.
Youth are naturally drawn to these beautiful animals, quickly becoming engaged and invested in
the therapeutic process. Many students quickly learn about the highly intuitive nature of horses
and are often surprised that they can't hide their emotional or mental states while interacting with
them. The animals immediately sense strong emotion and provide instant, honest feedback.
A certain stance, tone of voice, or facial expression can communicate volumes to these intuitive animals. Troubled adolescents develop new ways of communicating and relating as they care for, train, and ride horses.
Since most of the interaction with horses is non-verbal, equine therapy
is ideally suited for teenagers who feel strong emotions, yet have
difficulty voicing them. With horses, the emphasis is on living in the
moment. This moves our students toward awareness of, and
eventually control over, their own internal and emotional states.
