Trails Carolina Educational Curriculum

English

Trails' English curriculum seeks to help students explore the power and relevancy of language and literature in the 21st century. Through journaling and class discussion, students investigate fictional and non-fictional narratives, making connections between the text and their journeys at Trails and beyond.  Assignments and activities focus on both creative and analytic self-application, giving students opportunities for oral and written response. Students hone their critical reading skills and evaluate ideologies, opinions, actions, and characterizations represented in text. Discussions challenge students to find their own “voices,” while recognizing thematic connections to their own experiences.

Earth Science/ Environmental Science

Trails’ Earth Science/ Environmental Science curriculum seeks to help students make links between themselves and the world under their feet. Students approach scientific problems from a place of exploration and curiosity, employing investigational strategies and prior knowledge to gain new understanding. Activities and lessons consider how past scientific and anthropologic events affect present phenomena. Students explore local geology, ecology, and astronomy, focusing on the scientific characteristics of their present environment. Students make applications between the “field” and the classroom, bridging the concrete and the abstract.

Physical Education/ Healthy Living

Trails’ Physical Education curriculum focuses on self-care, forms of movement, and physical fitness. Students learn physical hazards in the wilderness and develop skills to ensure their optimal health. Instruction emphasizes the connection between healthy living “on the trail” and healthy living at home. Students are challenged to set physical goals for themselves and monitor their progress towards achievement. Activities encourage students to push physical limits, while being attuned to their bodies’ individual needs.  Ultimately, Trails teaches students to explore health holistically —identifying the interconnection between physical and emotional health.
